El Paso is the largest municipality on La Palma; It is located on the western slope, grouping the entire upper part of the Aridane Valley and La Caldera de Taburiente, over an area of 135 square km. It limits with all the municipalities of the Island, except Tazacorte and is the only one that lacks a coastal strip.
Surrounded by the moles of Bejenado, Cumbre Nueva and part of Cumbre Vieja, the relief is presented as a large expanse of rocky and more or less recent lava fields, traditionally dedicated to the cultivation of rain-fed, grassland and forest.
The upper region of the Aridane Valley stands out for having the highest aboriginal population on the Island, which indicates the strong territorial occupation in a clear indication of the use of plant resources for its rich cattle herd.
The new European settlers, from the sixteenth century, settle in the lower areas of the valley, exploiting the forest resources of their forests that, little by little, are giving prominence to the broken lands, where the scree predominates. In order to take advantage of the agrarian space, the stones they collected from their orchards were piled up, with great patience, giving rise to the spectacular majanos (piles of stone in a pyramidal shape) and walls, very characteristic in the "Llano de Las Cuevas". Most of these breaks occur in the first quarter of the 19th century.
The city of El Paso is located along the road that linked Los Llanos and Tazacorte with the Capital through the summit, hence its name (El Paso). Until 1837 it belonged to the jurisdiction of the Aridane Valley, at which time it became independent, granting it the title of Villa in 1878 and that of city in 1910.
