En el año 1987 este espacio fue declarado como Parque Natural de Ojeda, Inagua y Pajonales y finalmente en el año 1994, fue reclasificado como Reserva Natural Integral de Inagua. A su vez, ha sido declarado zona de especial protección para las aves. Dentro de este espacio se encuentra el refugio nacional de Caza de Inagua, Ojeda y Pajonales y engloba al área que contiene los Monte de Utilidad Pública de Ojeda, Pajonales e Inagua.
Ésta reserva se encuentra incluida dentro del área del Parque Rural del Nublo, en los municipios de Tejeda, Mogán y San Nicolás de Tolentino.
Los montes, Inagua, Ojeda y Pajonales constituyen uno de los pinares naturales mejor conservados de Gran Canaria. Ésto, unido al hecho de albergar varias cabeceras de barrancos importantes (Mulato, Mogán, etc.), le confiere un papel fundamental en la recarga hídrica subterránea y la conservación del suelo. Entre la flora y la fauna de la reserva, se encuentran varios endemismos amenazados. Para algunas especies de aves, como el pinzón azul, estos pinares constituyen su refugio principal.
Además, ésta zona posee gran interés científico, geológico y geomorfológico, con un paisaje de gran espectacularidad.
