Este municipio de Gran Canaria, está situado sobre una amplia y fértil vega agrícola del tramo medio-alto del barranco Guiniguada, en las medianías del centro-norte de la isla de Gran Canaria, a 22 kilómetros al suroeste de la capital insular.
Vega de San Mateo es también conocido como San Mate. El Área protegida de Las Cumbre cubre el 47% del municipio. Está situada a 800 metros sobre el nivel del mar.
El macizo central tiene los picos más grandes de la isla: Pico de Las Nieves, 1,961 m, Los Pechos, 1,945 m., y Roque Saucillo, 1,850 m.
