Garachico

Garachico is a Canarian municipality located in the northwest of the island of Tenerife, in the natural region of Isla Baja.

The city of Garachico with its port was founded in 1496. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Garachico became the main port of the island, but in 1706 an eruption of the Trevejo volcano, also called Arenas Negras, ended the golden period. of the locality. The lava flows descended, devastating and burying a large part of the town, especially its port, which was completely covered. From here the merchants started to use the Puerto de la Cruz dock and Garachico was left as a small fishing port. The lava flow that reached the sea won the municipality territory and some pools and pools known as the Caletón, which are of great tourist attraction and special for bathing.
Due to its difficult orography, the municipality has neighborhoods distributed from the coast to the mountains.

The Villa and Puerto de Garachico has samples of its brilliant past in the houses, convents and churches of the best architecture. Garachico was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with the category of Historic Complex, since it has very important buildings such as the Hermitage of San Roque, the former convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, the old Convent of San Francisco or the Hacienda de El Lamero .

It also has the Casa de los Marquesses de la Quinta Roja, the Casa de Piedra or the House of the Counts of La Gomera; the Parque de la Antigua Puerta de Tierra, the Matriz de Santa Ana church or the Castillo de San Miguel -declared Asset of Cultural Interest with the category of Monument-, are added to an offer that is completed with ideal places for meeting and relaxation , such as the Plaza de la Libertad and Plaza de Abajo, or Las Lonjas, also known by the name of Juan González de la Torre.
