Camino de Jinama

This is the busiest and most lush vegetation trail in El Hierro. Through it the Herreños have lived centuries of changes, overcoming a slope of more than a thousand meters of altitude to be able to be in El Golfo during the harvest, collect the seeds and the fruit or dig the potatoes.

The town closest to its beginning is San Andrés, from which it is separated by about three kilometers.

The inhabitants of Isora, La Cuesta and San Andrés were the ones who most used the Jinama road to go down to El Golfo in what is known as the moudadas. You had to go down several times a year and go back up again. With their few belongings and household items, the Herreños had two houses. The moves were made to settlements that in El Golfo grouped together residents of the same neighborhood or town from the upper zone. When the climate on the plateau was harsh, they took the opportunity to carry out field work related to the vineyard and other fruit trees and feed their cattle.
At the summit, the path starts at a height of 1,230 meters above sea level at a viewpoint, next to which is the hermitage of the Virgen de la Caridad, patron saint of Herrera walkers, who entrusted themselves to her to ask for protection during the transit or to thank the return to the towns of the interior.

After 1,500 meters of travel, you reach the Miradero, it is the name of the rest located on a curve or open ledge of the road from which you can see in its entirety the panoramic view of the Valley to its limits to the west, with the town of Sabinosa and the coast of Arenas Blancas.

At 1,800 meters of travel is the Fuente de Tincos and very close is the hole that bears the same name. This fountain gave drink to all who walked along the way, for which it is well known.

On the way you can see the Risco de Tibataje and La Fuga de Gorreta, an area declared a special natural reserve, since there are about a thousand specimens of the giant lizard of El Hierro, one of the most threatened reptile species in the world. Planet, and that in captivity it reproduces in the recovery center of this species that is in the Gulf Valley.

The trail in general is very beautiful and shows diversity of landscapes. It has flatter sectors and others with a little more slope. At the end, you can see a general panoramic view of several nuclei of the Gulf Valley and presents a steeper slope, to then enter the nucleus of houses that announce our arrival at the Plaza and the church of the Virgin of Candelaria, patron saint of the Valley.
